Managing Creative Projects
Over many years of managing my own freelance projects I have developed skills using Agile methodologies, UX principles, as well as ideas behind Design Sprints, to manage many different projects. In fact even with personal projects, one of the first things I do is start an Excel file to begin managing it.
All projects start similarly; there is an existing condition, and a desired end condition to achieve. Tasks in between can vary. And once determined, the way to track them can also vary. Tracking ingredients for a party; how much to buy, and expenses, need a different setup than tracking the logistics for a conference panel; which panelists need passes, registering the panel, getting the facilities needed, etc.
Projects I've managed include managing a VR panel (several years now), at the SIGGRAPH conference. Working with the team for The Pipeline Conference, to get a venue that works for what we have in mind yet is still affordable. Tracking work on a VFX project in After Effects; what effects are needed for each shot, what is done and what is yet to do. And event tracking all the activities surrounding putting on a party; music selection/edit (with visuals), food purchase, prepping, and cooking, tracking guests, etc...and fitting it all into the time allotted.

About Me...I have been doing something artistic since I can remember so it's not surprising I work on creative projects.
It's only later that I found myself drawn to the producing/ managing aspects of projects. I am the person who's on time for a party, not fashionably late. And compared to most, I am pretty reliable. In fact I've seen creatives fail to make their ideas a reality so often, I even moderated a panel on the topic several times at SIGGRAPH (Getting Your Project Done). Ideas are a dime a dozen, making it a reality is the hard part and most people can't do it. What they need is someone who's both an artist and adept at project management...and that's where I come in. |
